Charlotte Mason wrote six volumes on education, philosophy, and the formation of the child. All six are in the public domain and freely available to read. We've gathered them here so you can go straight to the source.
Charlotte Mason (1842โ1923) was a British educator whose approach to home education transformed how many families think about learning. She believed children are born persons โ not empty vessels to be filled โ and that education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life.
Her six-volume Home Education Series lays out her philosophy in full. Volume 1 is the natural starting point โ it covers the early years and the foundational principles. From there, the volumes deepen and expand her ideas across all stages of education.
You do not need to read all six to use our curriculum. But we believe parents who read even part of Mason's own words will find their homeschool transformed. These books are not dry theory โ they are alive, and they will encourage you.

The foundational volume. Mason lays out her philosophy of education for the early years โ the atmosphere of the home, the formation of habits, the importance of nature, and her method for early reading. Start here.
Mason's reflections on the relationship between parent and child, the nature of authority, the formation of character, and the responsibilities of the home educator. Rich reading for any parent.
Mason addresses the education of older children โ curriculum, methods for the middle years, and her vision of what school ought to be. Highly practical for parents of grades 4 and up.
A book for older students as much as for parents โ Mason writes directly about the inner life, self-knowledge, the will, and the formation of a person of character. Unique among the six volumes for its voice and depth.
Mason explores the practical formation of character in children and young people โ habits of mind, the will, the dangers of certain tendencies, and the role of the parent in shaping a child's inner life.
Mason's final and most mature volume โ a summation of her life's work. She articulates her philosophy of education with the clarity and conviction of someone who has spent decades in the classroom and in careful thought. An essential read.
